Not only is the year 2012 coming to end but the Muslim new year is very close too ,this celebration is Known to most Gambians as” Tamxarit.”.The Islamic year lasts for about 354 days and consists of 12 months. Muharram is the first month and some Muslims mark the start of the Islamic year on the first day of Muharram. Many Muslims fast on the 9th and 10th day inorder to commemorate the anniversary of the death of the prophets grandson.
Gambia being a predominantly Muslim Country take this day very seriously. The Gambia Supreme Islamic Council have announced that Friday 23rd November will be the day of Tarsua and Saturday 24th November will be the day of Yawmul Ashura, locally known as Tamxarit for the year 1434H of the muslim calendar. The Council Thursday said the 15th November 2012 was the first day of Muharram, the first month of the Muslim Calendar, while the 9th and 10th day of Muharram will be on Friday 23rd and Saturday 24th of November respectively.
On this day,according to the books, , it is believed that Allah created the heavens and the earth. It is even said that Allah gave His blessings and bounties to many of His Prophets and freed them from the clutches of their enemies.It is said Adam was also created in the month of Muharram and also pardoned for his mistake in this month only. It is even said Noah’s Ark landed successfully on Mount Judi during this month centuries ago. Ibrahim was saved from fire and Musa was rescued from the Pharaoh during this holy month of Muharram.
Gambians normally celebrate this day by 2 days of fasting, on the 2 nd day most of the Men & Women spend the whole night at the mosques praying untill dawn.On the day itself women cook a local dish called Cherreh and dish them out to relatives and neighbours alike as a sign of forgiveness and a start to a blessed newyear.
