2 Senegalese opposition leaders to be granted amnesty

This includes the two opposition politicians Khalifa Sall, former mayor of Dakar and Karim Wade, former minister and son of former president Abdoulaye Wade; who were both tried, convicted and then pardoned. This means that the pardoned politicians can vote and be voted for including the 2024 presidential election.

It could be called that, Khalifa Sall was arrested and detained in 2017 and jailed in 2018 to 2019 for corruption and embezzlement of public funds.

The 66-year-old politician was supposed to serve 5 years in jail but was pardoned by president Macky Sall in September 2019.

Khalifa Sall, who originally was a member of PS, formed his own political party ‘Manko-Taxawu Senegal’ which means join hands to save Senegal.

Meanwhile, Karim Wade, son of former president Abdoulaye Wade, who served in his cabinet, holding five ministerial positions at the same time was jailed in 2012 for corruption and embezzlement of public funds.

The 54-year-old politician was supposed to serve 6 years in prison, was pardoned in 2016 and later went to Qatar for asylum.

Karim Wade is an executive member of the main opposition PDS party.
