The protests, which occurred in some parts in Dakar and Ziguinchor, claimed two lives in Zinguinchor and one in Pikine, Dakar, whilst 12 protesters were arrested.
The party of Sonko was also dissolved on Monday, and the assets of the dissolved party would be liquidated in accordance with the legal and regulatory provisions in force.
This is the third time a political party has been dissolved in Senegal – the first was Majmoud Diop’s Parti de Independence et du Travail in 1960 and the second was Cheikh Anta Diop’s Bloc des Masses Senegalaise (BMS) in 1964.
At the time of going to press Senegal was relatively calm.
