Veteran Gambian lawyer and onetime Attorney General and Minister of Justice during the defunct AFPRC military junta Mr. Fafa Edrissa M’Bai, has been scheduled to appear before Gambia’s Truth, Reconciliation and Reparations Commission (TRRC), Freedom Newspaper has been reliably informed. Mr. Mbai had served as Justice Minister in the early days of junta. He never stayed long on the job, as he eventually had a fallout with the military council, then headed by Chairman Yahya AJJ Jammeh.
According to reliable sources close to the TRRC, the Niamina Sambang born retired lawyer, has this past week been crisscrossing between his home and the TRRC to hand over his written statements to the commission. Mr. M’Bai has been scheduled to appear before the witness stand on Monday April 19th, 2021 to give evidence on his knowledge about the past Jammeh administration, particularly on issues relating to the judiciary.
A highly educated and respected lawyer, Mr. M’Bai, was the main brain behind the setting up the Legal Year. The Legal Year was created to reflect on the importance of the legal profession and judicial independence.
The TRRC is indeed expecting a big guest. Mr. M’Bai is going to face his junior Essa Mbye Faal, the TRRC lead Counsel.
Mr. M’Bai is expected to give evidence on some of decrees that were drafted during his short stint with the junta and the circumstances that led to his firing.
Back in the 1994, Mr. M’Bai had an interview with the BBC’s Robin White during a visit to Britain, in which Robin told him that he was likely not going to last long in his job. But the lawyer wasn’t the least worried about losing job for standing up for what he believes in.
That interview coincided with a travel advise that the British government had issued urging its nationals not to travel to The Gambia during that year’s tourist season. Sussa Waffa Ogoo was the Tourism Minister at the time.
It would be recalled that Mr. M’Bai had also serve as Attorney General and Minister of Justice under Jawara’s government. He is a career lawyer, blessed with a wealth of experience, knowledge, wisdom and virtue.
