Gambia’s opposition leader Ousainou Darboe led a four-man delegation in the month of February 2021, to meet with the Director General of The Gambia Immigration Department Seedy Touray, Freedom Newspaper can authoritatively report. The goal for Darboe’s unannounced visit, according to sources, was for his party to raise key issues of concern with the Immigration boss, especially on matters relating to foreign nationals being allegedly naturalized, the alleged secret issuance of identity cards to non-Gambians, and the secret importation of an ID Card printing machine into the country. The UDP delegation was consist of the following people:
Alhagie S Darboe
The meeting was held at the GID’s conference room. Mr. Darboe spoke at length during the meeting. He claimed that he had received information suggesting that foreign nationals were being naturalized in the country. Darboe had also raised the issue of non-Gambians being secretly issued Identity Cards. His delegation also confronted the Immigration boss about an ID Card printing machine that they said, was secretly imported int the country.
In attendance at the meeting was DG Touray and his management team. The Immigration boss, according to sources, had categorically refuted the allegations contained in the UDP delegation’s claims. Darboe and co were told that there was no secret naturalization of foreigners, that the GID wasn’t secretly issuing ID Cards to foreigners, and there was no ID machine imported into the country.
The immigration management has also challenged Darboe and his team to supply them with evidence so that they could investigate the veracity of their claims, a source told us.
Mr. Darboe, Gambia’s onetime De Facto President, and his delegation left the Immigration Department with “shame”, as they couldn’t substantiate their false allegations against our men in uniform. One of the delegation members Yakumba Jaiteh had spent about thirty minutes at the meeting before leaving. She claimed that she had a business to take care of.
DG TOURAY SOUGHT PERMISSION FROM THE INTERIOR MINISTRY TO RECEIVE DARBOE AND CO.
According to reliable sources, there was nothing shady about the meeting the UDP delegation had with DG Touray. DG Touray, according to sources, had sought the permission from the Interior Minister Yankuba Sonko, before receiving Ousainou Darboe and co. Touray was given the clearance by the Interior Minister to receive the opposition leader, sources said.
In another development, the UDP delegation had also held meetings with other service chiefs. Among them include: the late Inspector General of police Mamout Jobe, and the Chief of Defense Staff Yankuba Drammeh.
The UDP delegation had raised the issue of the upcoming December 4th Presidential elections with the security chiefs.
Political analysts are of the view that the UDP delegation were out to harass and intimidate the GID boss and his security chief colleagues. There wasn’t any substance in their unsubstantiated allegations peddled against the Immigration Department, sources said. Ousainou Darboe is increasingly paranoid, and he has been trafficking false pre-election possible rigging claims, said the analyst.
Highly placed UDP executive members have confirmed the recent visit that their party leader and co had made to The Gambia Immigration Department.
