An incident happened at the Talinding south registration center, where a UDP voter registration agent was arrested, Freedom Newspaper has been reliably informed. The UDP voter registration agent identified as one Yaye Darboe, was accused of obstructing a voters’ card applicant. A pandemonium later ensued between her and the NPP voter registration agent Bunang Bass. She was later arrested and detained by the police.

The UDP voter registration agent was said to have questioned the citizenship of a lady, who was at the center to obtain a voters’ card. Allegations are that the applicant is not a Gambian citizen, that she is a Senegalese, though there is no evidence to substantiate such claims. She was issued an attestation to obtain a voter’s card.

The MP for the area Fatoumatta Jawara was reportedly present when the incident happened, sources said.

Yaye Darboe was briefly held at the Talinding police station before she was moved to the Kairaba police station. It is not clear if any charges have been filed against her.

It was late at the time of going to press to reach the police spokesman for comment.

UDP voter registration agents have been having issues with voters’ cards applicants. The Independent Electoral Commission even recently had to cautioned them to stop using the voter registration centers to police voters’ card applicants.

Just last week, the office of the Inspector General of police issued a statement warning the UDP voter registration patrol team to refrain from interfering with the work of the IEC workers deployed in the field to issue voters’ cards to applicants.
