Concern Universal has been active in the Gambia since 1992, working in partnership with Gambian development organisations to have a positive impact in the lives of the people in poor communities.
Since 2002 we are also active in neighbouring Senegal, with a focus on the region of Casamance. With a main focus on rural development, the scope of our activities now includes peace building initiatives and HIV/AIDS awareness-raising and is based on successful partnerships with local organisations, donors and government.
Concern Universal is committed to addressing the needs of impoverished and isolated communities, who are often disadvantaged by their location. We draw on our experiences and the wealth of knowledge of our partners to create opportunities for a diverse range of activities. We recognise the potential of people to change their own lives through their own initiative and enterprise and the importance of fair access to markets to ensure that the benefits of globalisation reach poor communities.
We focus on three strategic sectors:
>Developing rural incomes that sustain livelihoods;
>Developing the ability of communities to avoid and respond to disasters; and
>Reducing the spread of HIV/AIDS.
