GAMBIA: BREAKING NEWS: MAGISTRATE SENGHORE RECUSES HIMSELF FROM THE CASE OF A JUDICIAL OFFICIAL, ACCUSED OF HIT AND RUN ACCIDENT!

Magistrate Demba Senghore has recused himself from the case of Saja Juwara, an Assistant court registrar, who has been charged with hit and run accident. Senghore said the accused person had worked under him in the past and hence he couldn’t try him. Juwara’s case was subsequently transferred to the Banjul magistrates’ court. His case is yet to be assigned to a new magistrate.

It would be recalled that Saja Juwara, an Assistant Registrar at the Banjul magistrates court was recently involved in a hit and run accident in the Lower River Region. His case file was filed before the Mansakonko magistrates court, but magistrate Senghore reviewing his case said he the (magistrate) was conflicted—given his past relationship with the accused. Juwara used to work under him at the Basse magistrates court as a court clerk.

Saja Juwara’s fate is yet to be decided. If convicted, he risked getting fired and serve prison time.

Magistrate Senghore has been hailed for his principle stance by recusing himself from the case. He has acted professionally by refusing to hear Juwara’s case, one insider said.
