The Minister of Higher Education Badara Joof has stated in no uncertain terms that neither the government nor the University of The Gambia, would commit itself to honoring the D6 million dalasis increment proposed by the staff Association of the UTG. He added that the government had a D6 billion dalasis budgetary deficit. He noted that the UTG staff should count themselves lucky for the proposed D4 million dalasis increment in salaries/allowances, taking into consideration a 50% salary increment effected in 2019.
Education Minister Joof was speaking during a meeting held at the Higher Education Ministry conference hall on December 30th, 2020.
This followed a planned protest action that was to be carried out by the UTG Faculty staff. The December 30th meeting had resolved on the following agreement:
That the academic staff in the rank/grade of Senior Lecturer and above should be confirmed and placed on permanent appointment at the next Council meeting.
That management should revise the conditions of service to reflect the eligibility criteria for confirmation and placement of administrative and ancillary staff on permanent pensionable appointment and to submit same to council for consideration before 27th February, 2021.
That management should determine the eligibility criteria of academic staff below the rank of a senior lecturer for permanent pensionable appointment and to submit same at the next council meeting by 27th February 2021.
That with UTG management’s allocation of D16 million for research, the academic staff should take advantage of this opportunity and conduct research on topical national issues on health, the back wat syndrome and education with a focus on WAEC Grade 12 results.
The meeting unanimously agreed that management and council should conclude the determination and approval of the eligibility criteria for categories of staff listed in 2 and 3 above by 27th February, 2021.
