The Gambia Men and Women Beach volleyball team left Banjul for Morocco to participate in the 2021 final rounds of the Olympic qualifications. The team was in residence for one month doing rigorous training. The qualifier will happen from the 19th to the 28th of June 2021.
Twenty-four countries in Africa will be participating in this Olympic qualification in Agadir, Morocco. The winning team will represent the African continent in Tokyo, Japan, for the Olympics in July this year.
Pa Babubacarr Barrow, the Head Coach of the Gambia volleyball team, told the Chronicle that the team is very optimistic about winning the Qualifications in Morocco, “we want to go there to compete and win for the Olympics come July.”
Coach Barrow added that the Team has the strength to win both the qualifications in Morocco and the Olympics in Tokyo, respectively. Therefore, the team is working on its weakness as the Olympics approaches.
Ablie Kujabi, Captain of The Gambia Volleyball Team
“We are going to represent The Gambia and Africa in general. That is our objective.”
Abie Kujabi, the Captain of The Gambia Women Volleyball team, said she is optimistic about the upcoming games in Morocco due to her teammates’ preparations. “We have a lot of support from The Gambia Sports Council and The Gambia at large.”
Miss. Kujabi has been the Captain of the Team for the eleventh year. Since then, she has been heading the team in both national and international games.
Sainabou Tambedou Gaye also a player in the Women’s Team
Sainabou Tambadou Gaye has also been part of The Gambia Women volleyball team for a while now. Mrs. Gaye said that both the Men and Women teams are more than prepared to conquer the game. “We have put in so much work, and it is time to showcase our talents and abilities in Beach Volleyball.”
In 2016, The Gambia Volleyball team finished 8th position in Africa. Currently, the Men team of The Gambia Beach Volleyball are Champions of Africa, and they look further to win the sole ticket in Morocco.
