The Gambia Press Union (GPU) will tomorrow commence its congress at Panchami hotel in Senegambia.

GPU, which is the umbrella organization for journalists in The Gambia, organizes congress after every three years where members of the union elect a new leadership to manage their affairs.

This year’s 2-day congress will be held on Thursday 28th October 2021 and on Friday 9th October 2021.

On Thursday, members of the union will be taken through the financial statement, activity report of the union and there will be room for them to review the proposed constitutional amendments.

On Friday, the last day of the congress, union members will vote in the new leadership of the union.

Already, three journalists have stepped forth seeking the topmost position of the union. Current vice president, Muhammed S. Bah; Kerr Fatou editor-in-chief, Mustapha Ceesay; and BBC and DW correspondent, Omar Wally are the aspiring candidates for the presidency.

The GPU secretariat also informed members that Isatou Keita of GRTS has shown interest to run for the vice president position and as it stands, she is unopposed and therefore she is automatically the VP elect of the union for the next three years except otherwise.

“The constitution of the press union has indicated that the top brass of the union should have five ordinary board members. Currently four individuals namely: Alieu Ceesay, Momodou Jawo, Paul Steven Prierra and Mariama Cham (MC) have shown interest in contesting as ordinary board members of the Gambia Press Union,” the GPU secretariat stated.

Founded in 1978 as a trade union, the GPU is the umbrella organization for journalists in The Gambia.
