The organising committee of the National Journalism Awards of The Gambia Press Union on Saturday held a press conference to brief journalists ahead of the 2022 edition.
The press conference was held at the GPU office in Kanifing. The Award is the highest and most prestigious journalism event in the country that honours, celebrates and encourages excellence in Gambian journalism.
The convergence outlined plans for this year’s awards among other crucial matters.
Speaking at the press briefing, Sanna Camara, committee member for the National Journalism Awards, said The Gambia Press Union since 2016, has been staging the National Journalism Awards, adding that the rationale behind the move is to motivate and commit journalists to strive for excellence in their various domains.
“The awards are part of GPU’s flagship activities in marking World Press Freedom Day on May 3 each year. However, due to logistical and other challenges, the awards ceremony is usually held on a different date,” Mr. Camara said. He added that plans were underway to hold this year’s event on December 2, 2022.
The award, according to him, is open to all Gambian journalists working for registered Gambian based media outlets and platforms.
“As a committee, our mission is to recognise and reward excellence in journalism in a bid to inspire others. We want to celebrate and recognise the work journalists do as well as encourage and inspire excellence in the profession.”
