The Gambia Judiciary on Tuesday concluded a two-day conference on the reforms of the Rules of Practice and Procedures of the High and Subordinate Courts.

The conference was meant to review some of the Rules and Procedures of the said courts to ensure the smooth administration of Justice. The forum was held at the Sir Dawda Kairaba Jawara International Conference Center, Bijilo.

Speaking at the conference, Justice Sainabou Wadda Cisse said the Judiciary of the Gambia developed a strategic plan for 2021-2025, with a strategic objective to “Review all Judicature Acts and Rules to reduce undue technicalities and bottlenecks.”

Justice Cisse added that the implementation of this specific objective of the strategic plan is vital for a more efficient and effective justice delivery system. While adding that there are general and critical challenges to some of the Rules of the Court, hence the calls from various quarters for the reform of the Rules.

She noted that their focus is to deliberate on some of the key provisions of the Rules of the High Court and the Subordinate Courts, identify the challenges they pose in the administration of justice, and come up with proposals to address them.

“The two days conference is a much-anticipated event that would afford a great opportunity to the Judiciary and all relevant stakeholders to set the stage for a collective and in-depth review of the Rules and Procedures that would ultimately promote timely, judicious, and cost-effective dispute resolution mechanism,” she said.
