Hon Madi Ceesay, National Assembly Member for Serrekunda West Constituency has defended the allocation of one million dalasis allocated for the victims of the recent talk about deadly Acute Kidney Injury (AKI) that claimed the lives of sixty-nine children as a result of the contaminated Indian syrups.

The outbreak of the AKI has caused a serious public outcry many described the incident as total negligence by the health ministry amid pressure from the public asking for compensation from the government.

Honourable Madi Ceesay the lawmaker for Serrekunda West in repose to the statement issued by the government for the allocation of one-million-dalasi cash to the victims of the deadly AKI conundrum explained his justification for the scheme: “The amount is more than enough because this is not a compensation it is to facilitate the movement of the minister and whosoever is going with him across the country to all the victims to pay their condolence.

The amount allocated is not compensation; the mandate is now given to the health committee. The outcome of their investigations and the recommendations is what will predict the compensation. If there should be compensation, a million dalasi would be too small for the victims. But this is just to facilitate the tour to meet the bereaved families.”
