National Assembly Held Its First Public Session.

Hon. Fabakary Tombong Jatta, Speaker Of The National Assembly

The National Assembly of the Gambia (sixth legislature) under the speakership of Hon. Fabakary Tombong Jatta held its first public session today.

The session started with the selection and approval of members of the Committee Selection, International Parliamentary Delegations, and Friendship Groups.

The Committee Selection is established by Order 111 of the Standing Orders of the National Assembly and in accordance with the same Order, they are mandated to “perform the functions allotted to it by the Standing Orders.”

The Nominations were made in accordance with clause 96 of the Standing Orders of the National Assembly. Order 111(1) of the Standing Orders provides that, the Committee of Selection shall consist of the Speaker as Chairperson, and five members of the Assembly, of whom three shall be nominated by the Majority Leader and two by the Minority Leader in Consultation with their respective groups.

Accordingly, the Majority and Minority Leaders of the Assembly have made their respective nominations to the Committee. Speaking about the Methodology of nominating members to the various Committees and International delegations, Hon. Billay G. Tunkara said the Selection Committee in its consideration considers the background of members, Political Pluralism, and Gender representations.

“The Consideration of the Committee was guided by Standing Orders 96 which is membership of the Committees. The Committee was equally guided by the Office of the Clerk and other parliamentary good practice and conventions,” -Majority Leader added.

After hours of debating and correcting the approval of the members of the various committees and International delegations, the speaker of the Assembly Hon. Fabakary Tombong Jatta adjourned the sitting sine die without debate.
