Speaking to journalists, the QGroup Foundation Executive Director, Isatou Jah said the foundation identified certain specific needs in different sectors mainly in Health and Education and provides services needed across the country.
She revealed that the QGroup Foundation in 2018, signed an MoU with MoBSE. “The MoU was based on active dialogue and focused interventions with the aim to encourage young Gambians to venture into Mathematics, Sciences, and ICT-related programmes at the University of The Gambia,” she said.
According to her, the QGroup Foundation in partnership with MoBSE established a scholarship programme for students in the Basic Cycle as the objective is to identify high achieving students from low socio-economic backgrounds to provide them funding to study at the UTG in STEM related field.
She further disclosed that annually, ten deserving students would be awarded a scholarship and the award will be distributed equitably across the seven Regional Education Directorates. “Tuition fees and free internet access for the entire duration of the study programme will be provided to successful candidates,” she revealed.
The scope of the sensitization sessions she said, will include raising awareness on career options in sciences and technology with focus on improving their engagement with information and communication technology related courses.
“As per requirements for the scholarship programme, interested candidates must register in the West Africa Senior School Certificate Examination (WASSCE) and must gain admission to pursue a Bachelor’s degree in Computer Science or Information Systems, Planning and Design, Mathematics and Data Science or Physics, Biology and Chemistry,” she noted.
The QGroup Foundation since it’s inception in 2016 as the philanthropic arm of the QGroup of companies, has put in place several initiatives and interventions with the aim of contributing to national development.
