The ECOWAS Commission has condemned the violence that caused loss of lives during protests in Sierra Leone on Wednesday.

The commission called on every one in the country to obey the law and also called for the prosecution of those responsible for the violence.

“The Commission of the Economic Community of West African States (ECOWAS) strongly condemns the violence that occurred in many locations in Sierra Leone and have led to loss of lives. ECOWAS calls on all to obey the law and order and for the perpetrators to be brought to justice, in accordance with the law,” the commission said in a statement dated 10th August 2022.

The statement by the commission headquartered in Abuja, Nigeria came following violent protests in the Sierra Leoneon capital, Freetown and other parts of the country on Wednesday.

The violent protests led to the declaration of a curfew across the country, a statement from the country’s police stated.

Reports said the surge in the cost of living in the country fueled the protests, leading to clashes between the security forces and the protesters.
