William Ruto Inaugurated As 5th Kenyan President

Kenya’s President-elect, William Ruto has been finally sworn-in as the 5th President of the East African country today.

The former Deputy President won the 9th August Presidential election over his long-term rival and former Prime Minister, Raila Odinga.

Ruto secured 50.5% and Odinga got 48.8% of the total votes cast, according to Kenya’s Independent Electoral and Boundary Commission (IEBC).

However, the opposition claimed that the election was marred with irregularities and challenged the results at the Kenyan Supreme Court, which dismissed his petitions.

The 55-year took over from Kenya’s 4th President, Uhuru Kenyatta, whom he served under as Deputy President.

Outgoing President Uhuru Kenyatta who stepped down at the end of his two terms has backed the opposition, Odinga in the election, saying Mr Ruto was unworthy to serve as president, according to the BBC.
