In his statement on the World press freedom day, the President of the Gambia Press Union Sheriff Bojang Jr. said despite the change of government, Gambia records more than 15 incidents of physical assault on journalists and media professionals in less than Four Years.
“Our records show that in less than four years, more than 15 incidents of physical assault on journalists and media professionals. All the attacks were prepetrated either by the police or politicians, including supporters of the president,” the GPU president said.
He continued that no serious investigation has been carried out into those incidents.
“No serious investigation has been carried out. No one ever [was]brought to book. The climate of impunity for crimes against journalist persists,” he said.
Every year, World Press Freedom Day is commemorated on 3rd May. It is a day meant to celebrate the fundamental principles of Press Freedom, evaluates Press Freedom around the world, and defend the media from attacks on their independence and to pay tribute to journalists who have lost their lives in the exercise of their profession.
